Junior Rugby Program Set to Hit the Paddock

After watching the Muswellbrook Heelers work hard in their first season back in the competition after a three-year hiatus, the focus will now shift to bringing some juniors back into the fold.

The club held a popular juniors program earlier in the year which they are set to do again in September.

“We’re not going to put a team in the comp, at this stage it’s more about just getting the kids involved and understanding what rugby is all about, and having a bit of fun in the process,” Dominic Pike, committee member, said.

“We’ve just got a big grant from Variety, and have a whole heap of new equipment coming through, so we’ll be able to do a bit of tackling practice, they’ll be able to do some rucking and mauling, and then the ultimate goal is to have some game play for the kids at the end of each session.”

Kids aged five to 12 years old are encouraged to register, where they will be split by age and experience levels to ensure they are all getting the most out of the program.

They will be guided through the five weeks by some of the senior players who have their coaching accreditation and are keen to continue to do their part in helping the club grow and prosper.

Dominic explained that they are looking long term in regards to bringing juniors back.

“The ultimate aim would be to do a couple of round robins where you can hold a special event where say Singleton come up to play the seniors on a Saturday, we can put in for a special event with Newcastle Rugby and then we might be able to do a couple of junior games prior to the seniors coming on, which would be good,” he told The Hunter River Times.

The program will start on Friday, August 30, with the final night being Friday, September 27, starting at 6pm.

Parents wanting to sign their kids up are encouraged to register prior to the program starting, but if further assistance is needed it can be given on the first night. For more information or to register contact Dominic on 0459 433 039 or via do*****@wa********.au .
